Dealing With Overpronation of the Feet

The term pronation has to do with the turning inward or outward of the foot when walking and running. When the foot overpronates, it rolls excessively inward, which can negatively affect the gait. Overpronation can affect the way you stand, run, and distribute your weight while active. Overpronation, which is often termed flat foot, also can lead to posture or walking problems and may even result in back pain. A podiatrist can determine the extent of overpronation by examining the wear pattern on the bottom of your shoes, as well as studying the foot from front to back. An imaging test, such as an X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI may be performed to determine the extent of the imbalance. Many people with overpronation difficulties rely on foot orthotics to correct the inherent problems. A podiatrist can create a custom orthotic for you that helps to relieve the pain and discomfort caused by overpronation. In addition, several muscle-strengthening exercises can be prescribed to increase arch support. Please contact a podiatrist today for further guidance.

If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Fox Valley Foot and Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

Big Toe Osteoarthritis

The big toe joint is one of several joints found in the foot and it is most often affected by osteoarthritis. This affliction primarily occurs in women and those who are aged 50 and above. The main symptom of this condition is pain and tenderness in the big toe that worsens when weight is put on the foot. The toe may be swollen or stiff and moving around is hampered.  While there is no single reason for the development of big toe osteoarthritis, factors that may increase the risk include an injury to the toe, having gout, or being obese. It might help to wear shoes with rocker soles or rigid orthotics. It can also be beneficial to perform specific toe exercises. However, further intervention may be necessary depending on the severity of the pain. If you have pain in your big toe, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for assessment and treatment.

Fissures Are Severely Cracked Heels

Mild cases of cracked heels generally are not concerning, and a good moisturizer may be used to help control this condition. Severe cracks in the skin are referred to as fissures and can bleed and cause pain. They can develop as a result of standing on hard surfaces for most of the day, or from wearing shoes that have an open back. There may be existing medical conditions that can lead to getting cracked heels. These can consist of different types of dermatosis, psoriasis, and thyroid disorders. Additionally, people who are obese may experience cracked heels, which may come from the extra weight the heels endure while standing and walking. The most effective way of treating cracked heels is by preventing them from happening. This can be done by drinking plenty of water daily, and frequently applying a good moisturizer on them. Some people enjoy using a pumice stone on their heels to remove dead skin that may have developed. If you have cracked heels, it is urged that you consult with a podiatrist who can guide you toward the correct treatment methods, which may include prescribing medication.

How Do You Get Them?

Dry skin is the number one culprit in creating cracked heels. Many athletes, walkers, joggers, and even swimmers suffer from cracked heels. Age and skin oil production play a role to getting cracked heels as well.

Promote Healing

Over the counter medicines can help, especially for those that need instant relief or who suffer from chronic dry feet.

Wear Socks – Wearing socks with medicated creams helps lock in moisture.

Moisturizers – Applying both day and night will help alleviate dryness which causes cracking.

Pumice Stones – These exfoliate and remove dead skin, which allows for smoother moisturizer application and better absorption into the skin.

Change in Diet

Eating healthy with a well-balanced diet will give the skin a fresh and radiant look. Your body responds to the kinds of food you ingest. Omega-3 fatty acids and zinc supplements can also revitalize skin tissue.

Athlete’s Foot Is a Common Foot Infection

Athlete’s foot, also referred to as tinea pedis, is a fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet. It is often seen between the toes first. The name, athlete’s foot, came into being because it was a common affliction of athletes with sweaty feet in tight-fitting shoes. The fungus likes warm, moist environments so wearing damp socks or coming into contact with contaminated surfaces, such as locker room floors and swimming pool areas, make for perfect hosts. Symptoms of athlete’s foot include dry skin on the side or bottom of the foot, a burning and stinging sensation, blisters, and itchiness. Athlete’s foot must be treated because of its potential of spreading the infection to other areas of the body and can cause pain. If you suspect you might have athlete’s foot, see a podiatrist who can confirm the diagnosis, determine what type of fungus caused it, and provide treatment.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is often an uncomfortable condition to experience. Thankfully, podiatrists specialize in treating athlete’s foot and offer the best treatment options. If you have any questions about athlete’s foot, consult with one of our podiatrists from Fox Valley Foot and Ankle Specialists. What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a non-serious and common fungal infection of the foot. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be contracted by touching someone who has it or infected surfaces. The most common places contaminated by it are public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Once contracted, it grows on feet that are left inside moist, dark, and warm shoes and socks.

Prevention

The most effective ways to prevent athlete’s foot include:

  • Thoroughly washing and drying feet
  • Avoid going barefoot in locker rooms and public showers
  • Using shower shoes in public showers
  • Wearing socks that allow the feet to breathe
  • Changing socks and shoes frequently if you sweat a lot

Symptoms

Athlete’s foot initially occurs as a rash between the toes. However, if left undiagnosed, it can spread to the sides and bottom of the feet, toenails, and if touched by hand, the hands themselves. Symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Scaly and peeling skin

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is quick and easy. Skin samples will be taken and either viewed under a microscope or sent to a lab for testing. Sometimes, a podiatrist can diagnose it based on simply looking at it. Once confirmed, treatment options include oral and topical antifungal medications.

Fractured Ankles in Children

A fracture of a child’s ankle is when one or more bones are broken in the ankle. A child who has broken their ankle may experience pain and bruising as well as trouble putting weight on their ankle or foot. If this happens, medical help should be sought from a podiatrist who will examine the ankle, do an imaging test, and provide appropriate treatment based on the results. Usually, a support device such as a brace, cast, or splint will be provided to protect the ankle and help the child limit movement. Crutches may need to be used with such a device to decrease pain and help with mobility. Pain medication and further intervention might be needed as well, depending on the severity of the injury. To enable healing, the child should rest his or her ankle and elevate it above the heart level as much as possible. If your child has hurt his or her ankle and is in pain, it is suggested that a podiatrist be seen as soon as possible.

Broken ankles need immediate treatment. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Fox Valley Foot and Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Broken Ankles
A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both of these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

When a physician is referring to a break of the ankle, he or she is usually referring to a break in the area where the tibia and fibula are joined to create our ankle joint. Ankles are more prone to fractures because the ankle is an area that suffers a lot of pressure and stress. There are some obvious signs when a person experiences a fractured ankle, and the following symptoms may be present.

Symptoms of a Fractured Ankle

  • Excessive pain when the area is touched or when any pressure is placed on the ankle
  •  Swelling around the area
  •  Bruising of the area
  • Area appears to be deformed

If you suspect an ankle fracture, it is recommended to seek treatment as soon as possible. The sooner you have your podiatrist diagnose the fracture, the quicker you’ll be on the way towards recovery.
