Systemic Diseases of the Feet

Systemic diseases affect the whole body, and symptoms usually are displayed in the feet. This condition can make a patient’s ability to walk unbearable.  Systemic diseases include gout, diabetes mellitus, neurological disorders, and arthritis.

Gout – is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. Common symptoms include pain, inflammation, and redness at the metatarsal/phalangeal joint of the base big toe. Gout can be treated by NSAIDs to relieve pain and inflammation, and other drugs that lower the acid levels in the body.

Diabetes mellitus – is an increase in the level of blood sugar that the body cannot counteract with its own insulin. Failure to produce enough insulin is a factor in Diabetes.

Diabetes of the Feet

Diabetic Neuropathy – may lead to damaged nerves and affect the feet through numbness and loss of sensation.

Peripheral Vascular Disease – can restrict the blood flow to the feet, and often times lead to amputation of the feet.

Two Types of Hammertoe and Their Treatments

Hammertoe is a common deformity in which the second, third, or fourth toe is bent at the middle joint. Hammertoes can either be flexible or rigid. Flexible hammertoe is a milder deformity where the affected toe can still be straightened manually, especially when not bearing weight. This type of hammertoe may cause some discomfort, but tends to be more responsive to conservative treatments, such as wearing roomier footwear or using toe cushions. Rigid hammertoe is a more severe form of the condition. This type of hammertoe is stuck in a bent position and cannot be straightened manually. Rigid hammertoe may result in chronic pain, and corns or calluses may develop due to increased pressure and friction against shoes. Podiatrists may use more aggressive treatments, like splinting or surgical intervention, to align the toe properly and alleviate symptoms of rigid hammertoe. If you have a hammertoe, or you are experiencing pain due to this condition, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can provide you with treatment options that are right for you.

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Fox Valley Foot and Ankle Specialists. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.

Symptoms

  • Painful and/or difficult toe movement
  • Swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Calluses/Corns
  • Physical deformity

Risk Factors

  • Age – The risk of hammertoe increases with age
  • Sex – Women are more likely to have hammertoe compared to men
  • Toe Length – You are more likely to develop hammertoe if your second toe is longer than your big toe
  • Certain Diseases – Arthritis and diabetes may make you more likely to develop hammertoe

Treatment

If you have hammertoe, you should change into a more comfortable shoe that provides enough room for your toes. Exercises such as picking up marbles may strengthen and stretch your toe muscles. Nevertheless, it is important to seek assistance from a podiatrist in order to determine the severity of your hammertoe and see which treatment option will work best for you.

Tips for Happy, Healthy Feet

Your feet carry you through life's journey, so it's essential to give them the care they deserve. From fungal infections to ingrown toenails, foot problems can be painful and inconvenient. However, with proper care and attention, you can keep your feet happy and healthy. Start by maintaining good hygiene, washing your feet twice daily, and drying them thoroughly, especially between the toes to prevent fungal infections like athlete's foot. Keep your skin moisturized, but avoid applying lotion between the toes to prevent fungal growth. Regularly remove hard skin from your heels and use a heel balm containing urea to prevent cracking. Choose breathable, well-fitting shoes made of leather to reduce perspiration and avoid synthetic materials. Trim your toenails straight across to prevent ingrown toenails, and avoid cutting them too short. Maintain clean environments by regularly bleaching your shower area and wearing sandals in public showers. If you experience persistent foot pain or notice any concerning symptoms in the feet, toes, and ankles, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist who is medically trained to deal with these problems.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Fox Valley Foot and Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Custom orthotics for children and adults differ significantly in their approach. The primary contrast lies in the developmental potential of children's feet, which is not as present in adults. Early intervention in children is essential, as their bone growth and alignment can be positively influenced, allowing for structural and positional changes that are less achievable in adults. In the case of children, larger and more robust orthotic devices are often utilized, especially in younger children. Children typically wear shoes that can accommodate these devices comfortably, making it less challenging. These deeper and more controlling orthotics effectively manage foot issues in the presence of laxity and low muscle tone frequently found in young children. Because alignment values in children's feet continue to improve until around 6 years of age, it is important not to completely neutralize existing deformities, allowing room for natural developmental changes. Due to the soft tissue nature of children's feet and ligament laxity, orthotic correction may need to be increased, especially in the rearfoot. Regular monitoring of a child's progress is vital for adjusting orthotic prescriptions at different stages of treatment. If your child experiences foot problems, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist to have their feet evaluated and discuss whether custom orthotics might be a help.

If you’re experiencing foot discomfort, have a history of foot and ankle injuries, or are interested in exploring Custom orthotics, don’t hesitate to contact one of our podiatrists at Fox Valley Foot and Ankle Specialists. Our doctors is dedicated to offering the care required to help you remain pain-free and stay on your feet.

What are Custom Orthotics?

These inserts are instrumental in providing relief and comfort for a diverse range of foot conditions, including heel pain, and can also act as a proactive approach to injury prevention.

Medical Grade Shoe Inserts:

A diverse array of shoe inserts is available for addressing foot pain, heel discomfort, and minor issues. For instance, you can place arch supports in your shoes to rectify overarched or flat feet, and gel and cushioned insoles are frequently chosen for the comfort and relief they provide from foot and heel pain by reducing pressure.

How to Find Foot Pain Relief From Arthritis

There are multiple varieties of arthritis, and a challenge many of them share in common is foot pain. Arthritic foot care is important to finding relief from arthritis, a condition that has no cure. Luckily, help from a podiatrist, lifestyle modifications, and physical therapy can all contribute to happier feet. If you have foot pain, it is suggested you consult a podiatrist who can provide personalized guidance based on your condition. They may recommend suitable footwear with good arch support and cushioning to reduce pressure on the affected joints. Podiatrists may also recommend regular stretching exercises, such as gentle calf stretches and toe exercises, which can help maintain flexibility and alleviate stiffness in the feet. Lifestyle modifications, such as losing weight and switching to lower-impact exercise, can also be important to arthritic foot care.  Over-the-counter or prescribed medications can be part of the treatment plan, and in some cases, your podiatrist may suggest custom orthotic inserts to provide additional support to your feet. If you are experiencing foot pain from arthritis, it is suggested that you make regular appointments with a podiatrist for ongoing care.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Naperville, IL . We offer the newest diagnostic tools and technology to treat your foot and ankle needs.
